چکیده

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS First of all, i would like to thank my advisor Prof. Laurence J. Jacobs for all his support during my stay in Atlanta. He helped me in desperate situations and motivated me whenever it was necessary. Because of his financial and organizational commitment , i could present the results of this thesis at the Quantitative Nondestructive Evaluation (QNDE) conference in Brunswick, Maine. I also want to thank Dr. Jin-Yeon Kim for all the fruitful discussions and the good coffee we had together. He helped me in an outstanding way to finish the experiments. I thank Prof. Jianmin Qu for his support and for giving me access to the facilities of the School of Mechanical Engineering. Moreover, i want to thank Prof. E. Michaels for letting me use their lapping machine and Kritsakorn Luangvilai for showing me how to use the laser interferometer. Special thanks go to Prof. Lothar Gaul for choosing me as a candidate for the ISAP Program which is financially supported by the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service). The DAAD is gratefully acknowledged for supporting me with its scholarship. I also want to thank Matthias Maess for his help in organizing the exchange program. Furthermore i would like to express my deepest gratitude to my family who is supporting me in an extraordinary way. I also want to thank all my friends in Germany and all my new friends in the U.S. Special thanks go to Ben, Helge, Thorsten (Spoon), Eak and Bo for the great working atmosphere in the lab. Last, but not least, i want to thank Ying Shanna Zhou for her love and patience with me.

Generation of High Order Harmonics from H2+ Molecule Ion by Using Homogenous and Inhomogeneous Laser Fields

We solved one dimensional Schrodinger equation in a H2+ molecular environment by using 3 femtosecond homogeneous and nonhomogeneous laser fields. In homogeneous case, we found out that larger inter nuclear distances result in earlier ionization and also more instability in the wave packet. We deducted that the more the instability is, the more modulated the power spectrum will be. So, by choosi...

Detection and Characterisation of Surface Cracking using Scanning Laser Techniques

The use of lasers for generating and detecting ultrasound is becoming more established in non-destructive testing. However, there is still scope in developing the techniques to fully realise the benefits of non-contact measurements. One application is the detection of surface defects in metals; for example, rolling contact fatigue in rails, and surface cracking on billets or plates. We present ...

Interaction of a scanning laser-generated ultrasonic line source with a surface-breaking flaw.

The scanning laser source (SLS) technique has been proposed recently as an effective way to investigate small surface-breaking cracks. By monitoring the amplitude and frequency changes of the ultrasound generated as the SLS scans over a defect, the SLS technique has provided enhanced signal-to-noise performance compared to the traditional pitch-catch or pulse-echo ultrasonic methods. In previou...

Detection of Leaky-rayleigh Wa Yes at Air-solid Interfaces by Laser Interferometry

Leaky-Rayleigh waves have been studied extensively at liquid-solid interface in the last 30 years [1-4]. Both leaky-Rayleigh and leaky-Lamb waves have found many application in Nondestructive Evaluation, e.g. surface defect characterization, etc [5,6]. Because of the difficulties associated with ultrasonic wave generation and detection in air in the megaHerz region air coupled non destructive e...

Problem of Rayleigh Wave Propagation in Thermoelastic Diffusion

In this work, the problem of Rayleigh wave propagation is considered in the context of the theory of thermoelastic diffusion. The formulation is applied to a homogeneous isotropic thermoelastic half space with mass diffusion at the stress free, isothermal, isoconcentrated boundary. Using the potential functions and harmonic wave solution, three coupled dilatational waves and a shear wave is obt...
